Veggie patty vs plant-based patty: what’s the difference?

This is the most important thing to understand before you order, because the two patties are completely different.

Veggie Whopper (vegetable patty)

  • Made from vegetables, which make up 58% of the patty: carrot, peas, corn, potato and capsicum.
  • It looks and tastes like vegetables, a bit like a crumbed vegetable patty.
  • Lower in protein (17.6 g in the Veggie Whopper Cheese) and higher in carbs.
  • Best for people who don’t want something that tastes like meat.

Plant Based Whopper (plant-protein patty)

  • Made from plant protein (19.3%), vegetable oils and thickeners.
  • Flame-grilled to taste like the classic beef Whopper.
  • Higher in protein, from 24.6 g up to 30.4 g.
  • Best for people who want the Whopper taste without the beef.

The Plant Based Whopper used to be called the Rebel Whopper.

Are Hungry Jack’s veggie burgers vegetarian?

Yes. None of the six burgers contain meat. They’re all on Hungry Jack’s Veggie Range menu.

Are they cooked separately from meat? Hungry Jack’s doesn’t say whether the patties are cooked on the same grill or broiler as beef. The Plant Based Whopper is flame-grilled like the regular Whopper. If you’re a strict vegetarian, ask your local store how they prepare it.

Are Hungry Jack’s veggie burgers vegan?

No, not as served. Hungry Jack’s labels every burger in the range “not suitable for vegans”:

  • All six contain mayo, which has egg.
  • Five of the six contain dairy cheese. The Plant Based Whopper without cheese is the exception.

Closest to vegan: a Plant Based Whopper with no mayo. Hungry Jack’s still doesn’t certify it as vegan, though, because of shared cooking equipment and other ingredients.

Hungry Jack’s veggie burgers vs other fast-food chains

Hungry Jack’s has one of the biggest meat-free burger ranges of any major fast-food chain in Australia: two different types of patty and six burgers. Other chains change their vegetarian and plant-based options often, so check their current menus before comparing.

Where Hungry Jack’s stands out:

  • A choice between a vegetable patty and a plant-based “meat” patty
  • Spicy veggie options, with the two Angry burgers
  • A double veggie burger for bigger appetites
  • Plant-based patties that are flame-grilled for a real BBQ taste

Homemade Hungry Jack’s veggie burger (copycat recipe)

Makes 4 veggie patties

  • 1 cup cooled mashed potato
  • ½ cup grated carrot, squeezed dry
  • ½ cup corn kernels
  • ½ cup peas
  • ¼ cup finely diced red capsicum
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs, plus extra for coating
  • 1 tsp each of garlic powder, onion powder and paprika
  • Salt and pepper

To serve: sesame buns, cheese slices, mayo, tomato sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion.

  1. Mix all the patty ingredients and shape them into 4 patties.
  2. Coat the patties in breadcrumbs and chill them for 20 minutes.
  3. Pan-fry in a little oil for 3–4 minutes a side, or bake at 200°C for 20 minutes.
