Hungry Jack’s Thick Cut Chips: Price, Calories, Recipe & Review

Hungry Jack’s Thick Cut Chips are the side you’ll add to almost every meal. They’re seasoned, thicker than skinny fries, and come in small, medium and large. Below you’ll find the price of each size, the calories, whether they’re vegan or gluten-free, and how to make them at home.

What are Hungry Jack’s Thick Cut Chips?

Hungry Jack’s describes them as “deliciously seasoned, delivering a crispier crunch on the outside, fluffy and hot on the inside.”

Ingredients (from Hungry Jack’s allergen guide): potato, vegetable oil, modified potato starch, rice flour, potato dextrin, salt, raising agents, thickener and maltodextrin. The rice flour and starch coating is what makes them crunchier than plain chips.

My tip: upgrading from medium to large adds 132 calories, more than a Hash Brown.

Are they vegan or gluten-free?

  • Vegan: the ingredient list has no meat, dairy or egg. However, Hungry Jack’s doesn’t officially label the chips vegan, and it doesn’t say whether they share a fryer with other foods.
  • Gluten-free: not guaranteed. The chips contain natural sulphites and may contain wheat, according to the allergen guide.

Copycat recipe (extra-crispy thick chips)

Serves 2

  • 3 large starchy potatoes (such as Russet or Sebago)
  • 2 tbsp rice flour and 1 tbsp cornflour
  • Oil for frying, and fine salt
  1. Cut the potatoes into 1 cm thick chips. Soak them in cold water for 30 minutes, then dry them well.
  2. First fry: fry at 150°C for 5 minutes until soft but still pale. Drain and cool.
  3. Toss them lightly in the rice flour and cornflour. This coating is the secret to the crunch.
  4. Second fry: fry at 185°C for 3–4 minutes until golden.
  5. Salt them straight away.

Air fryer version: after coating, spray them with oil and cook at 200°C for 18–20 minutes, shaking halfway.
