Hungry Jack’s Plant Based Whopper: Price, Calories, Recipe & Review

The Plant Based Whopper is Hungry Jack’s meat-free Whopper. The flame-grilled patty is made from plant protein and designed to taste like the classic Whopper. It’s the same price as the beef version. Here’s the nutrition, whether it’s vegan and how it compares with the real thing.

What’s in the Plant Based Whopper?

Hungry Jack’s says it “features a patty made from plants, flame-grilled to give the irresistible smoky, BBQ flavour just like our classic Whopper.” It’s topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mayo and tomato sauce on a toasted sesame seed bun.

What’s in the patty: according to Hungry Jack’s allergen guide, it contains 19.3% plant protein, plus vegetable oils and thickeners. It’s a meat substitute, unlike the vegetable patty in the Veggie Whopper Cheese.

Is the Plant Based Whopper vegan?

No, not as it’s served, because the mayo contains egg. Hungry Jack’s labels it “not suitable for vegans”. Some people order it without mayo, but Hungry Jack’s doesn’t certify it as vegan, and they don’t say whether the patty is cooked on the same broiler as meat.

It has slightly fewer calories than the beef Whopper and costs the same. Just don’t expect it to be much healthier: it still has a similar amount of fat and sodium.

My review

[YOUR TASTE TEST]

  • Blind test: could you tell it wasn’t beef?
  • Does it get the same flame-grilled flavour?
  • Your photo and your score out of 10

What the specs tell me: it’s the best option for anyone cutting back on meat who still wants the Whopper taste.

Copycat recipe

Makes 2 burgers

  • 250 g plant-based mince (for example v2food or Beyond, from the supermarket)
  • Salt, pepper and ¼ tsp smoked paprika (for the flame-grilled flavour)
  • 2 sesame buns
  • Egg-free mayo (to make it vegan), tomato sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles
  1. Shape the mince into two thin, wide patties and season them.
  2. Cook on a very hot chargrill pan for 3 minutes a side to get grill marks.
  3. Toast the buns.
  4. Build it: mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, patty and tomato sauce.

Tip: with egg-free mayo, your homemade version is fully vegan.
