Hungry Jack’s Burgers (2026): Full Burger Menu, Prices, Calories & Best Picks

Hungry Jack’s sells more than 40 burgers across beef, chicken, Angus and plant-based. There’s a $3 cheeseburger and there’s a triple-patty Whopper with more than 1,300 calories, so knowing what to order isn’t always easy.

Is Hungry Jack’s the same as Burger King?

Yes. Hungry Jack’s is Burger King’s franchise in Australia. Both sell the Whopper, and both use flame-grilled beef.

Why is Burger King called Hungry Jack’s in Australia?

  • 1971: Jack Cowin opened the first Burger King franchise in Australia, in Perth. The name “Burger King” was already registered in Australia by a small takeaway shop in Adelaide, so he couldn’t use it.
  • The new name: Burger King’s parent company at the time, Pillsbury, gave him a list of its other brand names. He picked “Hungry Jack”, the name of a Pillsbury pancake mix, and added the apostrophe and “s”.
  • 1990s: when the Adelaide trademark expired, Burger King Corporation opened its own “Burger King” stores in Australia, alongside Hungry Jack’s.
  • 2001–2003: after a legal dispute that Hungry Jack’s won, the Burger King-branded stores were converted to Hungry Jack’s.

So today, every Burger King-style restaurant in Australia is a Hungry Jack’s. The menu is Australian, though. Items like the Brekky Wraps, Jack’s Fried Chicken and Grill Masters Angus don’t exist at Burger King overseas.

Which came first? Burger King, which started in the US in 1954. Hungry Jack’s followed in Australia in 1971.

How Hungry Jack’s makes its burgers

Flame-grilled beef. Every beef patty is cooked over a flame rather than on a flat grill. That’s where the smoky, BBQ taste comes from, and it’s the main difference from McDonald’s.

100% Aussie beef. Hungry Jack’s says its beef has no additives, preservatives, colourings or fillers.

Chicken. Jack’s Fried Chicken is made with 100% Aussie chicken in a crunchy coating. The grilled chicken burgers use a flame-grilled chicken breast fillet.

Freshly made to order. Burgers are made after you order, with fresh salad.

  • The Aussie Burger: a beef burger with beetroot, egg and bacon. It’s not on the current menu.
  • Tropical Whopper: a Whopper with pineapple.

Hungry Jack’s vegan and vegetarian burgers

Vegetarian:

  • The Veggie Whopper Cheese has a vegetable patty made from corn, capsicum and carrot.
  • The Plant Based Whopper uses a plant-protein patty that tastes like beef.

Vegan? Not as served. They all contain egg in the mayo, and most contain dairy cheese. Hungry Jack’s labels them “not suitable for vegans.”

Burgers and the main menu start at 11am. Before that, the kitchen serves the breakfast menu. Some 24-hour stores serve burgers late at night and overnight, but most stores switch to burgers at 11am.

Is Hungry Jack’s halal?

Only at selected stores. Hungry Jack’s nutrition guide flags which items are halal at selected restaurants. Halal-certified stores display their certificate. Burgers with bacon are never halal.

Burger King history: I wrote the history section from what I already know, without checking new sources this time: the 1971 Perth opening, the Adelaide trademark, the Pillsbury “Hungry Jack” pancake mix name, and the 2001–2003 legal dispute and rebrand. These are well-documented facts, but check the dates against Hungry Jack’s About page if you want to be certain.
